The Basics of Indoor Air Quality

The Basics of Indoor Air QualityPoor indoor air quality is usually the result of a number of factors. From common particulates such as dust, pollen and pet dander, to more organic threats such as mold and bacteria, any number of variables can compromise the quality of your indoor air. In fact, even products you consider harmless, such as personal hygiene products, may be having a negative impact on your day-to-day life.

There are many ways to improve the quality of your indoor air. Perhaps the most effective is source control. For example, if a smoker lives in your home, you might encourage him or her (or yourself!) to smoke outside. This will help reduce the chemical residue and odor left behind by cigarette smoke.

Of course, not all threats to indoor air quality can be physically removed from the home – not fumes and odors resulting from cooking, for example. In this case, increasing the ventilation of your home might alleviate the problem. This is the exact purpose of kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, which perform spot ventilation to remove odors and moisture from your indoor air. Of course, you can get better results with a whole-house ventilation system, many of which not only exhaust stale, contaminated air from your home, but also introduce fresh, filtered, outdoor air.

Another method of improving indoor air quality is to clean the air itself. This can be done using portable or whole-house air purification systems. Some of these systems rely on mechanical or electronic filtration to address particulates, germicidal UV lights to address microorganisms, or some sort of chemical reaction to reduce the effects of chemical residue. The best of these systems manage to combine mechanical filtration with a UV-activated catalyst, allowing you to address particulates, microorganisms and gases simultaneously.
